We always know the dominance of a player such as Babe Ruth, whose power levels were truly out of this world. Factor in his superb pitching skills during this time period and he is considered the best baseball player of all time, transcending titans in baseball such as Willie Mays and Ty Cobb. Of course, we know the pure dominance of Babe Ruth during his baseball career, but I think that we can go further and say that Babe Ruth's pure dominance during his baseball career transcended the sport and created the "slugger" image that many of us associate within today's hitters. Case in point, we can take a look at the HR difference and the ISO difference between Babe Ruth and the rest of the hitters. The .248 difference in the ISO between Babe Ruth and George Sisler, a perennial hall of Famer and one of the league's best, is even higher than the difference between Barry Bond's ISO and Albert Pujols's ISO during the 2003 season, and it is not even close.
Babe Ruth hit more home runs than entire TEAMS, which truly showcases the slugging pioneer that Babe Ruth was. Before this time period, all lot of baseball was dead-ball play: getting the ball in play, stealing a ton of bases, and making small plays that got you on base. However, with the advent of a player such as Babe Ruth during this time period, his prowess opened the door for the acceptance of sluggers and players who were more willing to go for big risk plays rather than the small plays that many players have embraced before this time period. Statistically, having a slugger on the team was usually more beneficial than other types of players as sluggers were usually the ones to generate runs and increase the RE24 state of the field dramatically. People loved seeing spectacles and inhuman actions such as soaring fly balls, so Babe Ruth was also a prime entertainer as well. Adding in the fact that Babe Ruth played in a huge market team like the New York Yankees and played during a national economic crisis (the Great Depression), Babe Ruth caught the attention of everyone that was looking at him. So when we see today's players and marvel at the pure strength of players like Giancarlo Stanton and Miguel Sano, we can thank Babe Ruth for the start of the slugger.
