Over my time in analyzing baseball analytics, I have noticed a plethora of statistics used by the sabermetrics community, some of them more valuable than others and others more streamlined than others. Although there are a plethora of statistics used by the sabermetrics community, I could not happen to wonder if we should focus more on statistics that focused on the player's contributions based on the changes in the win probabilities in the players. Think about it like a WAR based on win probabilities rather than the actual runs that the players contribute to the game. Using this method might be better than other methods because using win probabilities, you only account for the runs that really count towards a team's victory. For example, if there is a blow-out victory, it is not going to count as much towards wins as opposed to a close game, since the runs scored in a close game can change the outcome and therefore allow for more impact towards a team's victory. However, runs scored in a blow-out game really do not have much impact and therefore don't contribute as much towards a player's victory. Notice that for this statistic, we are not measuring the true skill of the players (such as DRC+), but rather evaluating the value that a players brings towards a team. FanGraphs already uses something like this already in their own website (WPA), and I think that in terms of contribution, it might be a great way to evaluate the impact that a player has. Of course, we should not ignore the other statistics already out there, but it is definitely noteworthy to focus on statistics like those rather than just WAR and wOBA and DRC+. Only though a total analysis of all metrics can baseball analyst make a clear conclusion on a player.
